I have so many people telling me they have a nice DSLR but they only shoot in auto mode all the time. They then ask me to teach them to take better photos. My first piece of advice is this: GET TO KNOW YOUR CAMERA. We challenge you to do the following: 1. Get out your manual. 2. Use it to identify every button on your camera. 3. If you don’t know what something (i.e. ISO or Tv) is, find out! Feel free to email us questions that we can address in future tip posts. Good luck and happy shooting.
I Spy Me: I took this picture waiting for the school bell to ring. I was sitting studying my pictures and nothing was inspiring me. Then I flipped down the vanity mirror and started shooting. I like the results. Exposure: 1/30 Sec at f/2.5. Focal Length 50mm. ISO Speed Rating ISO 100. Flash did not fire. Canon EOS 7D. Lens EF50 mm f/1.8 II
This photography challenge started one afternoon when Addie and I were chatting about wanting to increase our photography skills and creativity. We both wanted to take a class but lacked the time and money. We decided then and there to have a 12 week photography challenge. We put together the 12 topics and challenged each other because we know that the more we shoot, the better we get. As we began, many friends became interested to join in the challenge and push their creativity and photography skills to the next level. The purpose of this challenge is to get yourself out shooting and become better no matter your current level behind the camera. Some of us are beginners and some of us are professionals. We welcome anyone to join us in this adventure. If you want to participate but don’t want your name attached to you photos, you are welcome to send us your images with a screen name for us to use so that you can stay anonymous.
Take pictures everyday anytime! The 12 week challenge is outlined below and the assignment is due before Monday @ 5:00pm PST.
Once you have completed the weekly challenge pick your favorite picture, title the picture, and email the picture to Jm3bee+Addie@gmail.com with all of the metadata. We know it can be difficult to narrow down to one picture, but that is part of the Photography Challenge assignment. Feel free to create a flickr account (JamieBEE and AddieWhite) and send us the link with all your amazing pictures!

According to Wikipedia a self-portrait is a representation of an artist, drawn, painted, photographed, or sculpted by the artist….creating a talking point as well as a public test of the artist’s skill.

Reflection: I took a million pictures trying to get all the focus, reflection, and aperture right on this picture. By the end of the shoot my arm was exhausted holding up and out my camera. I enjoyed this shoot. Exposure: 1/2000 Sec at f/1.8. Focal Length 50mm. ISO Speed Rating ISO 100. Flash did not fire. Canon EOS 7D. Lens EF50 mm f/1.8 II. Post Production in LightRoom 3: B&W Creative – High Contrast
Update: Karl thank you for the feedback with the Crop. I like the longer image and no second reflection in my glasses. I kept in my entire nose and I strangely like how the focus is on my glasses and “concentration line” in my forehead. It makes the arm & camera reflection a deeper look into the picture. Nice.
